What do we want from Europe? - French and British attitudes

Written by David Goodhart

What do we want from Europe? Should we expect completely different answers to this question on either side of the Channel? If the idea of Europe was originally sold to the French as an extension of the French state, the British have dealt with the problem by remaining semi-detached from the process of European integration. But if both attitudes are fast becoming untenable, what kind of approach is replacing them? With the aim of looking below the surface of these questions, the Franco-British Council brought together, in October 2001, a distinguished group of politicians, civil servants, journalists, academics and heads of think-tanks for a one-and-a-half day discussion followed by a press conference. A lively and frank debate ensued. The report by David Goodhart, Editor of Prospect Magazine captures the spirit and substance of the discussion and covers such subjects as the legitimacy and reform of European institutions and Europe's global role. Speeches delivered to the conference by the Rt Hon Peter Hain MP, Minister for Europe, and his French counterpart, M Pierre Moscovici, are included as annexes.
