Transatlantic Relations
Written by Jean-Marie Le Breton
A seminar was held in March 1999 at the Western European Union, Paris, chaired jointly by Jean François-Poncet, Senator and former Minister in the French government, and Lord Hurd, former British Foreign Secretary. It brought together senior politicians, diplomats and academics from both countries to take an in-depth look at changing relations between the USA and France and Britain. The report by Jean-Marie Le Breton, Director of the French Section of the Franco-British Council has now been published. Some of the areas it explores are:- Economic issues: in particular the effect on transatlantic relations of the advent of the Euro
- Security issues: the consequences for the Atlantic alliance of the end of the cold war and the emergence of the US as sole superpower
- Cultural misunderstandings: the need to correct widespread ignorance of the USA in France and Britain, and to encourage interest in United States studies within universities.
