French and British views of the situation in the Middle East
Written by Jean-Marie le Breton
A seminar held in Paris in early July 2002 brought together some senior politicians, diplomats, academics and journalists to identify positive steps which France, Britain and the EU might take towards reducing tensions in the region. The Israel/Palestine conflict was discussed, as well as Iraq, US policy, public opinion and the future of oil. Strong views were put forward on both sides, but divisions of opinion were as much within each delegation as between them. While no-one understated the US's predominant role in the region, the discussion did throw up some useful ideas about how Europe might help bring about a peaceful solution to its conflicts. Even 'gesture politics' are not without their uses, it was felt, in influencing public opinion. The report by Jean-Marie le Breton, Secretary-General of the Council's French Section summarises the debate and the conclusions, and includes the seminar programme and list of participants.Number of pages/format: B5 16pp
